How good are social services in your area?

03 August 2006
A recent stocktaking exercise provided evidence that joint reviews continue to play a key role in providing the public with a robust answer to this question.

The first published joint review reports have proved very effective in:

  • providing clear judgments about performance that are strongly based in the evidence;
  • highlighting good practice;
  • promoting improvement;
  • safeguarding the interests of service users and carers.

Some changes are needed in the way reviews are conducted, in part to reduce the amount of work Councils have to do while reviews are taking place.  A recent letter to Councils from the joint review lead managers gives an update on the progress already made in introducing such changes.

The encouraging message is that joint reviews retain a significant impact within Councils and remain important in telling the public about whether social services are improving.
